If there's a schedule change you can usually cancel for free. Since there's no advantage to cancelling early, wait until the day before or so and watch for any schedule changes. If something does change, call in to say the new schedule doesn't meet your needs and that you'd like to cancel.
Well, the United agent actually said that the penalty is USD 200 if ticket is cancelled at least 21 days before travel date. She was unable to say what the penalty would be if cancelled less than 21 days before travel date but suggested it might be higher. It didn't sound very accurate or reliable, but it's all I could get out of her!
