I would definitely do my homework first, if I were you, so that you are able to tell them exactly which flights you want instead - especially on a MR, when the agent is unlikely to either understand or sympathise with the purpose of your trip. I don't see why you should be limited to changing AA flights - if some of the BA flights need to be changed as well, they ought to be able to accommodate that.
