This is wildly incorrect.

AA is perhaps alone among carriers in having a published policy to this effect. Many other airlines will assist you as a matter of course if you're connecting with two tickets on the same airline, and some will even do so if you're connecting from a different airline. It's somewhat riskier if there's no formal policy in place, but one need only spend about five minutes looking on this site to see that it happens all the time.
