I have no idea what a "major opaque channel" is, but if it means that Hertz is trying to market a lot of high-mileage, dirty cars that smell like smoke at an inflated price, then I would agree.
Here's a specific example: I picked up a full size car today at Alamo at TUS. Total price for the weekly rental after all discounts: $110, and it's a reasonably clean Camry with 13k on it and it doesn't smell like smoke. A Hertz rental for the same period, with all discounts, would have been $183 for a full size, and the odds are it would be high mileage, dirty, and smell like stale cigarettes. I rent cars weekly and check prices almost daily -- Hertz is pricing themselves out of the market, at least down here.
