I don't think UA was doing this -- something else was adding them to your calendar.
No, never used tripit.

I have not seen how this works, if I select LHR I do not see any evidence of any of my flights for trips that are in my gmail calendar.

Those fancy schmancy headings and auto-add to the calendar were done by Gmail rather than by United. It's parsing your email and then creating that header and adding it to your calendar. I still have it showing for a flight booked 8/17, but on some more complicated itineraries it doesn't show up.
Correct, I am using gmail to receive these emails and always suspected that some sort of parsing was done and it got added. Not sure why that would suddenly stop and I was making an assumption that whatever it was that it parsed was no longer in the United emails. Wild speculation on my part as I have no clue how that works.
