It difficult to answer this. It's tempting to say "Hilton is better than Marriott is better than Bass." But if I break things down by brand--and this is just my opinion, mind you--they're all intertwined:

I had a bad experience with Sheraton (Seattle) a few years back--so unbelievably bad I let my accrued points expire and to this day refuse to do business with Starwood.
