Tieing two separate AA tickets together for consecutive flights

Apologies if there is a topic on this already - I couldn't find anything.
I'm booking an AA flight from Miami to Costa Rica (SJO). There is a small chance that I will need to amend my starting point to Tallahassee. Sorting the route is fairly easy as it would just be an AA down to Miami a few hours before to connect to my existing flight to SJO. Question is, if I make my booking from Miami (non changeable ticket) and then need to add the TLH leg later on, can I simply buy a separate ticket for that leg and get AA to tie the bookings together?
The two aspects of this are:
1. Would the luggage get checked through?
2. Would I be protected if I missed the connection as both flights are operated by AA?
Answers very welcome - thanks!
