Hi,
My girlfriend just had her rental car being broken into during her trip to the west coast. I am not with her during the incident, and she told me that she already talk with the police and "have the issue fixed". However, I would want to share this with everyone here and seek any actions that we can take to reduce the loss.
Few points of information to note:
- Her car was broken into when they are not presence. All of their bags are stolen but their baggage are still there.
- She is with her parents who hold foreign passport. Unfortunately all of their passport were stolen.
- She called the police and have the policy report already, she also went to the Embassy to get the passport issue resolved for her visiting parents.
- She did not take advantage of the AMEX rental protection, and actually purchase the damage and loss insurance with National. They claim that because of that, all the cost of the car damage is covered.
Overall, she is now safe and the passport issue for her visiting parents are figured out. Now that all of those more urgent issues are taken care of, we are then thinking about the cost in the trip because of this incident. Including all the bags that were stolen, the cost of applying for temporary visiting certificate and change in schedule and hotels actually cost quite a fortunate...
I know that it might be too late for us to do anything about those, but is there potentially be any way for us to claims any sort of insurance? Or at least in the future, would using any specific card on any specific purchase (air tickets, car rental, hotels) could help us reducing the cost?
Thanks for reading the story... I am very glad that my girlfriend and her family is safe, but I would really appreciate f anyone can provides us tips on how to deal with such incidents if things like this ever happen again (

).
Many thanks,
Pete
