In 2014 I pursued the bonus point package strategy to hit Platinum and, although I probably didn't overspend to earn those extra points (5k = $35 or less), I have had so little benefit from Platinum in 2015 that I regret not having saved the money or moved those stays to other chains.
You should only ever count on the status bonus points from IHG status. Upgrades are entirely random.
Pick up the 2 free nights by all means - double it with your GF - and spend them at an IC where your IHG status is mostly irrelevant. If you have a lot of stays in early 2016, you can pick up Spire then and get 2 years of status out of it.
