The basic way the Gold Passport folks shared the situation is that awards are pulled from two different inventory buckets
So lets say you reserve now on points and cancel trying to change the booking later
the space may or not be there when you go to re book or it may well be.They have to cancel the points room and start a whole new booking
For whatever reason Chase Free nights tend to be capacity controlled
So if you re-booked and the point awards were still there it doesn't guarantee a booking with your Chase free night award
Ive gotten many different versions of the Chase free night awards being a bit more limited than point awards and some saying they are the same inventory
Because I tend to have pretty reliable past experiences shared by others and those that I trust inside Gold Passport
I tend to believe Chase free nights plain and simple are more limited
But even with all that said it depends who you ask at the time
