Looks like all's well that ends well, and that there was never any need to panic. The advice in post 4 was spot on. Big4Flyer gets his/her rate, and the Hotel Del (at which I've stayed, by the way, for a lot more than $92 per night, and been very satisfied) gets some positive PR with a bunch of frequent travelers by reaching out publicly in post 7.
(I once booked a mistake air fare. The airline would have honored it if I hadn't had to cancel for personal schedule reasons. They get big points in my book for that, too.)
Have you been following the toys-out-of-pram contest with the BA Germany fares? BA really messed up loading mistake fares in F and then pulled them, with appalling customer communications, but the behaviour of some spoiled brats is really astonishing.
