The shame is not so much in the fees as to how they are hidden.
Many AP members collect points hoping to get a free (or near free) ticket, not a discount on a regular ticket, yet IMO nothing will change because Canadians as a group fail to apply sufficient pressure on AP or their sponsors. For all their high-pitched cries of scandal, too many continue to choose the CCs or other instruments that will get then AP (as the CBC article makes clear).
(Respectable_Dad and R_Mom were astounded when I got them a pair of YUL-CDG tix on AF at the time if their choosing using my DL miles for ~$100/tix 5 years ago, yet they still collect AP miles despite my exhortations to change.)
