If you are close and want to get Gold you have a couple options:
1) Phone and ask for extra time to get the points. BA can give you up to two weeks (it is reported - I have never tried)
2) Do a TP run for the points.

I have never heard of someone being promoted when close. I have heard of BA rolling you over for another year of Gold when you are close though.
