The Star Alliance once wrote to me and told me that I was very close, and offered me the opportunity to purchase enough points to put me over. I actually took them up on it, as the Gold Card opened up exit row seats for my excessively-tall physique. I appreciated the opportunity, and the airline cashed in.

I've never known BA to do anything even remotely similar, however.
