The way it has worked for me since they changed SDC to only being allowed if your fare bucket is available is that the exact same award "fare" has to be available or they charge you the new price. I've also had one where the award "fare" was cheaper and they refunded the difference. All awards have a fare class associated with their level. So, technically you can SDC but it has to be the same as what you already have booked.
Edited to add that I've only done domestic coach awards where I've tried to SDC under the new rules.
