My Samsonite is over ten years old and still great. I needed something bigger last trip and bought a Briggs Riley recently and after one flight and one cruise looks horrible that I need to send it to get fixed. My expensive lesson learned
I too have had good luck with Samsonite - but the difference in the two companies is you'll be able to get that bag fixed with B&R whereas Samsonite would be likely to say "that kind of damage is not covered".
Unfortunately you can't predict what the baggage handlers will be like (I once got a bag back that looked like a forklift had bent the frame, while others have come through completely unscathed), so a less expensive bag could've come back looking even worse than your B&R did.
