IME, while there usually is an excess in Europe (or most of the world), there is normally no excess on North American rentals. OTOH, you can get exclusions on things like tyres, windscreens, etc... Something else that US rental companies have taken to do in recent years is to only offer limited road assistance and sell it as an extra for things deemed to be your responsibility such as lost keys or tyre punctures. These things are not included in LDW.
