Two years ago, my family and I were fortunate enough to visit Prague as well. We met a nice man at the train station and ended up staying at an apartment above his home on the outskirts of the city. Naturally, staying a 30-minute tram ride away from the commercialized areas provided for a fantastic cultural experience!
A small restaurant the gentleman's wife recommended was cozy and VERY local. (It is my recollection that the only words of English they seemed to speak were "Yes" and "No.") In any event, we were glad that we brought our Eyewitness Guide to Prague, which had beautiful illustrations and pronunciations of the local delights. As a family of four, we dined on succulent roast pork, steamy dumplings, sauerkraut, gravy, bread rolls, tall glasses of Budweiser Budvar, thick coffee, and a delicious chocolate/raspberry dessert -- all for under about $12!
While the Eyewitness Guide isn't the only thing to take (we supplemented it with our Rick Steves' and thick Lonely Planet guides), it definitely provides some fantastic illustrations that should help most with various menu items.
Hope this helps.
