One explanation could be that they didn't have a crew available that was legal to fly. By legal, I mean sufficient rest/available duty time. I had this happen recently. At the time, they rescheduled it, they expected they would have a crew. Then, as crews started trickling in to the airport late, crew scheduling figured out it wasn't going to happen. So they cancelled around 1 AM so passengers would have advance notice before heading to the airport.
The whole thing is a chain reaction. The crew and the plane were not necessarily coming from the same places, and if there was a new delay or cancellation on one of *those* flights, the flight could not go out at 9am, even though they "intended" for it to when they made the initial call to reschedule it to 9am.
For example, they thought an inbound aircraft was going to land around midnight, and planned on using that to fly you out at 9. That flight kept getting delayed and was eventually canceled, meaning your flight had to be canceled.
