I understand about the weather issue. But why did AA not cancel the flight right away and instead tell everyone that flight was taking off tomorrow morning. Then cancel it after everyone left for the night. If they truly intend to take off in the morning at 9:30, there is no reason for them to cancel flight around 1 am.
One explanation could be that they didn't have a crew available that was legal to fly. By legal, I mean sufficient rest/available duty time. I had this happen recently. At the time, they rescheduled it, they expected they would have a crew. Then, as crews started trickling in to the airport late, crew scheduling figured out it wasn't going to happen. So they cancelled around 1 AM so passengers would have advance notice before heading to the airport.
