One explanation could be that they didn't have a crew available that was legal to fly. By legal, I mean sufficient rest/available duty time. I had this happen recently. At the time, they rescheduled it, they expected they would have a crew. Then, as crews started trickling in to the airport late, crew scheduling figured out it wasn't going to happen. So they cancelled around 1 AM so passengers would have advance notice before heading to the airport.
