I have done this once, at a Westin, but it was only a day or two after checkout. Deal with their accounting department, not the front desk staff. You shouldn't need to prove anything, just explain that the stay was charged to the credit card in your profile which was used to guarantee the reservation, but should have been charged to the card presented at check-in. You don't need an explanation, you are the customer.
