In the letter it only said "domestic", but the website still has the rules posted and it says they are for the "48 states from Mileage Plus", which means two things:
1) No Hawaii
2) Since they're "Mileage Plus" tickets most likely no miles
Oh well, you can't win 'em all!
BTW, if I do fly on United in the next year I most certainly will take UA miles ... UA miles + HHonors points! Besides, I always take the miles on whatever airline I'm flying, because I never know when I'm going to move and have to switch preferred carriers!
Obviously I want to make these tickets count ... so I'm thinking Seattle or California ...
