This kind of sums up Japan for me.

I think the "make eye contact" applies to Taiwan too so should be used to it! I just wonder can bikes in Japan be any worse than motorbikes (scooters) in Taiwan?? In Taipei as you know they are often more scooters than cars on the road, which is the biggest problem for me (being American ex pat driver in Taiwan), so was thinking also renting a car in Japan (Sapporo), but thinking can not be worse than Taiwan.
