Gold Stay August 2015

I stayed last week for two nights on business. I have been to this property multiple times over the past 10 years, usually for 1-2 nights at a time. This time I was disappointed.

I was upgraded to an Executive floor, I had lounge access, and I had a welcome snack in my room when I arrived.

I used the lounge for breakfast on my first morning. I couldn't help but think, "Is that it?" The word meagre comes to mind. I went back the next morning to grab a coffee, and the offering was again very thin. I took breakfast in the main restaurant.

I also tried out the lounge during evening happy hour. It has been years since this property offered complimentary drinks in the lounge, so I was expecting to pay for my beer, but again I was shocked by the limited snacks on offer. I arrived less than half an hour after opening and the cheese plate was picked clean but for one lonely piece of brie. The lounge attendants were serving small plates from the kitchen, one table at a time. Why so cheap? It gives a terrible impression.

The min-bar in my room (and assume the others) was empty, although the fridge was still there.

The hotel now uses towel cards, which I find to be a nuisance. (Has been in place since before my last visit in Sept 2014).

On the plus side, the kids club has been moved to a much nicer location near the pool bar / basketball net and the staff there seems to be keeping the kids active rather than plunking them in front of the TV. There are other improvements around the pool with a line of hammocks strung up on the beach.

But the worst incident was the with the room renovations taking place on the 7th floor. I was on the 6th. I was already awake, but at 7 am the hammering started. It wasn't bone rattling, more like someone mounting moulding with a small hammer, but it was constant. I made a fuss at reception about it, but the response was underwhelming.
