I fly DL (and before that NW) rather than AA and my experience has been that there is a jetway search to confiscate liquids at PVG but I've never experienced it at NRT. I some airports such as CDG and LHR I've seen a few passengers being pulled aside and searched, but they haven't done a quick hand search of everything like seems to always happen at PVG.
