You get a free one 3 days before departure if it's still available (and 24h as FB Silver) - which it almost always is. This year I have only traveled in Comfort+ on Delta on my FB Gold long haul, just needed to remember to change my seat online. I just arrived with DL long haul this Wednesday and there were still 3 Comfort+ seats left on Monday, one being a window seat so no problems there.

Long-haul, the food is edible and in case of AF I'd even say very good (can't be said about DL), the wines are drinkable (DL tetra-pack wine anyone), IFE is slightly better on DL, but then everyone on DL long-haul flights seem to be hooked to their iProducts.
I guess I'll just have to try AF long haul. Agreed about DL wine, even when they bring actual bottles on board, it's never Chateauneuf du Pape (at least in Y).

I rarely fly noon-time flights, but I've taken some that depart AMS around 11 and sandwiches were still distributed. You can get a glass of wine with your meal, if that tickles your fancy.

The only think where DL somewhat wins is that they let you bring everything and a kitchen sink on board - really, I've seen people lugging a huge duffel bag AND a big carry-on AND a backpack AND a laptop bag on board. AF and KL are better in policing what people take with them, though that varies in outstations.
You must be flying different short haul routes than me. On LHR-AMS, AMS-PRG, LHR-CDG you get a cookie in a plastic wrapping, at least in the afternoon. The wine on AF is a nice touch though, I remember once getting a glass of champagne at LHR which the crew were spontaneously handing out on arrival - that wouldn't happen in Delta Y. Having said that, AMS-PRG almost always departs from the tarmac so everyone gets crammed into the bus at gate, and this virtually never happens even on the shortest-haul DL routes.
