As my son goes to the University of Michigan (GoBlue!) I have stayed here 6 times over the past year and a half, and will be back next week. As the OP mentions it is new and bright and clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly. The price is usually reasonable, except for a football weekend (nothing in AA is reasonable on those weekends).

You can walk across to the Briarwood Mall. It is a 10 minute drive to the UM Central Campus. A half hour drive to DTW.

My stays have never been more than 3 nights, so we don't cook, but we have occasionally used the microwave and refrigerator. The included breakfast is nothing to write home about but is definitely adequate.

I stayed here on my first trip to AA and they have never given me a reason to try any place else.
