This, and you receive one Tommy Point. And, as the parent of two small children, I'll take it one step further: it's not unreasonable to expect at least a quiet atmosphere in any cabin. I agree that the cabin crew should have stepped up earlier, although it does appear that once they finally got involved, all was well again.

OP, you were more patient than I would be. I would have been on the FAs much earlier. Being a parent makes you more tolerant when something goes wrong that you truly can't help (a screaming baby whose ears hurt, for instance). But it makes you that much more vicious when you see parents being negligent.*

At least is not a Chinese airline where there's a high chance a parent will let their child defecate in the cabin !!!!
I don't want to blow your trip to Tokyo, but the Bose headsets tend to make high-pitched sounds worse, not better. Having said that, I've really had very few problems with kids acting up on long-haul flights. The situation seems to get discussed a lot more frequently than it actually occurs.

*I also recognize that there are times when a parent is so tired that their reaction time might not be as quick as it normally would be, and I try to make allowances for those occasions. I hold my wrath mainly for those parents who are having a little party while their kids are raising hell.
