What is this with "Paying more to reserve seats in advance?" I've always been able to get my seat assignment at the time of booking, and, what's more, in all of my experience, the earlier a booking is made, the cheaper the fare (except when some deal or fare ware pops up).

IMO, so long as you are permitted to board the plane, whether first or last, your seat assignment is *yours*.
