Naxos, IMHO if the airline's rules are that pre-assigned seat assignments are relinquished at a certain time, then late-arriving passengers whatever the reason, should not be able to reclaim their seats.

However, you identified a different problem as well: If someone had to change their seat due to an allergy or other actual medical problem (as opposed to a preference), then that should take preference, it seems to me.
