One thing you can do in the future is to ask an agent to add a "TCP note" to your PNR (and your companions can add one to theirs). This is essentially a note that tells agents you're traveling with others (and should be kept together). "TCP" stands for "To complete party" and is actually what some call "linking PNRs".
