My wife and I will be in Rome from May 30-June 3rd and are looking for hotel recommendatinos. I have checked out the Marriott and Starwood properties, and besides the fact that they are sold out, the prices are a bit (ok a lot) beyond our budget .

When we travel in Europe we generally just try and find lodging when we arrive in the city by going to the hotel booking service when we arrive in the central train station. However, with this being a Jubilee year (and all the hype/concern of the hordes of tourists such as ourselves to converge on Italy), we are considering booking ahead.

Any recommendations for small hotels, bed & breakfasts, and/or pensions would be greatly appreciated.
