The Guardian article's revenue calculations assumed that each flight would be full in all classes. Assuming this was not consistently the case, and that the flat-bed would attract additional CW pax, then the business case would have looked a lot stronger.
The problem was BA was far from full in J on many routes and the move to dusk raised the average revenue yield for J seats with greater occupancy, although lower potential occupancy.
A fundamental driver was the seat offered by the developer of the F seat. If BA hadn't bought it and another carrier had it is likely that BA would have been bought at a later date too.
