IHG points on dining when a reward stay

I recently used my free night voucher (UK Barclaycard) which, of course, I understand does not generate IHG points in any way. Myself and some fellow travellers dined in the hotel charging this to my room for ease. Upon check out I settled the bill which amounted to just over £400. I was surprised on checking my IHG account to see the dining element has been listed within the "non qualifying stay" section. I called IHG to check and they confirmed that a non qualifying stay negates any points award for incidentals or dining.

Is this correct? If so I guess it's lesson learned - don't spend anything when on a free/awards stay!
