Well, there was that incident a few years ago where an AC pilot mistook a star for another plane and ended up injuring 16 people and putting 7 of them in hospital. The investigation blamed pilot fatigue. And changed nothing, apparently.
Besides, pilot fatigue is an established cause of air accidents. I believe learning from others' experience is a basic rule of flight safety.
The FAA changed their rules following Colgan. I'd rather we change ours now than wait for someone to die to admit there may be a problem.
