Got a point there, the reason for the 1k vs silver comparison was because Cathay goes up one grade per plan year and it'll be very easy to get the lowest tier. From there, of course it'll get harder but not massively so.

In terms of importance of either airline, being at the CX hub is handy for the number of flights but there are more than enough Star Alliance flights too.
