United 1K vs Cathay/MC Silver

Either one is possible for me within about two 2 flights but I am conflicted which one would be the better choice to try to obtain. With economy class tickets, Cathay seems to be the better option given that there's a tangible chance of getting stuck in regular economy for long haul United flights. This having happened makes it into a real worry.

Pluses for UA's program I think are, guaranteed PQM making status cheaper and getting GPUs though I'm not sure how useful they really are. For Cathay it's down to better seats and nicer food with the option at times to get their economy plus at a good price. In terms of benefits so far platinum vs MC green hasn't been terribly different other than lounge access which goes away with MC silver.

Of course, beggars can't be choosers but in this case there's somewhat of a choice and I'm wondering whether anyone's experienced both and can opine on the more beneficial option?
