Would you consider a hotel closer to the Pham Ngu Lao/Bui Vien St area? There are some decent hotels around that backpacker area. Since "time is the essence", you would be smack in the action zone once you check in.
If you chose the Renaissance Riverside because of free stay with points, then my suggestion would not work.
