I get too the idea that he should be happy for even one upgrade.
Perhaps the better scenario would have been a quick explanation right away that a second was not going to be possible.

However a bigger point is that it seems there are too many SE's that get too upset if they are not the ones getting the upgrade.
(sure i understand that over the years there has been abuse of the system but surely there can be times when adjustments can be made)

for the record been SE for a number of years.
When traveling with spouse and only granted one upgrade always goes to her.
Once (just once) SD said privately as we boarded it is almost empty up here today - grab the empty seat beside your wife. Thanked them profusely - told number of friends afterward how nice AC was to do this - and sat quietly.

Methink had I broadcast it on here some would have wanted the SD fired.
