Just purchased (18AUG @ 2AM Eastern time) a ticket for a flight departing JFK at 6:30PM on Wednesday, 19AUG. Am I correct to assume that I have until 11:59PM tonight (Tuesday 18AUG) to cancel, since in DL's view midnight tonight (Tuesday) is actually midnight of the Wednesday 19AUG departure date?

Cancellation request must be made by midnight of the day after the eTicket is purchased or midnight of the departure date of the first flight, whichever comes first. Available only for eTickets purchased at the time of reservation through Delta ticket offices and airport ticket counters, Reservation Sales, or at delta.com.
You should have until 2359 Wednesday but be aware that the time zone of the departing flight is not necessarily the time zone in which the ticket was issued -- there have been some reports of a ticket issued by an office in SLC or elsewhere which, if that had happened in your case, would mean the effective purchase date was Monday, not Tuesday.
You used to be able to tell where the ticket was issued by notes in the receipt but of course Delta felt that was giving us too much power so stopped sharing that information.
