If people can just talk there way into upgrades - people will just try for that instead of buying higher fares, saving e upgrades or buying business class tickets.

If you wanted to sit next to your wife you could have just sat where you purchased tickets - that was acceptable to you at time of booking. You didn't actually explain why you should have gotten an upgrade too - did they split up booking, oversold py etc or was it just chance occurance.
