A service charge of whatever amount is just that--a charge the hotel adds on to your bill for service. The server in most instances, and I do mean MOST, does not get this service charge. Because some hotel servers have complained to management in the past, some hotels have opted to add a gratuity to the total. If so, most often the chit you sign will say or have stamped on it, "Gratuity Included". Instead of taking the time to read the fine print, I usually ask the server if the gratuity is included in the total. You could even take an extra 30 seconds when you call Room Service to ask if the gratuity is included in the total that the server will bring you to sign. These people survive on tips just as a server in a restaurant.
