- Anything that would impair my trip if it were delayed a day or two. In addition to the items above I like to pack at least two days of fresh clothes in my hand luggage. That way if my checked bag is delayed I can function normally for a while and not have to rush out to a clothing store right away to buy replacements.
Assuming I am checking in luggage:
That's about the size of it. My iPad, iPhone (and chargers), ID, cash, CCs, and jewelry all go into either my purse or my carry-on.
A folder with all of my travel information (including tickets and reservation numbers) will likewise go into my purse or carry-on.
My prescription meds will go into my carry-on.
My 311 bag (where I carry enough toiletries for the entire trip, be it one week or one month) goes into my carry-on.
My make-up and a hairbrush. If all else fails, I will at least look decent. And it's a very small amount of space taken up.
A couple of changes of underwear, an extra bra, and a clean top that goes with whatever I am wearing. One thing that works well: a sweater set (twin set). Depending on weather, I wear a tank top and blazer on the flight, and bring a cardigan with me if the plane gets cold (very Mr. Rogers of me). A twin set is then just one extra article of clothing (shell) that gives me several options if my checked luggage goes missing.
