Outbound: AMS -> LGW -> (then the next day but <24 hours later) LHR -> LAX
Return: LAX -> LHR -> AMS
If this were possible, I understand I'd need to re-check luggage.

It is possible.
In either event, the fare construction will show AMS BA X/LON BA (insert TATL/domestic US segments here) LAX (insert fare basis and price in NUC.)
For obvious reasons, this is best done on the inbound.
