I realise the OP does not have enough miles for a Business award to OZ/NZ from Europe but the only cheap tickets from Europe to US/Asia will be in Economy.

A flight from Europe to Tokyo will be longer than from TYO to SYD or AKL and go through 7 or more time zones. If I have to choose between flying Economy or Business between Europe-Tokyo or Tokyo-OZ/NZ, I would fly Europe-Tokyo in Business and Tokyo-OZ/NZ in Economy.

I think the OP's plan only makes sense if he/she can buy a cheap ticket to fly to the East Coast of US/Canada in Economy and get a Business award to OZ/NZ from there.
