We have had weird stuff stolen from our checked luggage - a belt, a child sized life jacket and an old, battered monogramed Lands End beach tote.
I carry on all my chargers/extra batteries/mini power bar. Most are duplicates of my home chargers purchased inexpensively from eBay/Amazon. Some planes and terminals actually have power outlets for passenger use. I find my phone gets drained the fastest on long multi segment trips.

Also separate out one change of clothes into carry on - bathing suit plus a second t shirt, comfortable pants and most importantly a clean set of underwear. Add toothbrush/toothpaste. I've experienced more than one flight delay and overnight delayed luggage to appreciate not checking these things in.

If all is lost I can always chill out at the pool while surfing Flyertalk
