It's always worked for me, albeit never over India...as internet access is not permitted while flying over.
Useless fact for QR F passengers on the A380 - When seated, look above your seat at the seatbelt sign. Along side it, is a sign with mobile phones. When it is lit up, it means not to use your phone (even if it is in Flight Safe Mode). However, when it is lit up during the cruise, it means no internet access nor OnAir GSM reception is available.
