No and yes. And not intentionally... First, earlier in the year, got the AF waived on the US Barclays MC... Second, when I called in to upgrade to Aviator Silver (after the US Barclays MC had morphed into Aviator Red), managed to convince myself and -- of greater importance, the Barclays CSR -- that that earlier waiver should continue to apply.
My primary reason for going Silver was (is) the EQMs, and since these are awarded in the calendar year obtained, this continued waiver has allowed me to get them for 2015 without the AF.
I'm less certain what will happen with the companion certificate. The website/T&C show
Earn a domestic economy fare American Airlines Companion Certificate redeemable for up to two companion tickets at $99 each (plus taxes and fees) provided that: (1) $30,000 or more in eligible Net Purchases are made with your Account during the card membership year (each 12 month period prior to the account anniversary date) and (2) your Account remains open for at least 45 days after the anniversary date.
A strict constructionist reading suggests that I (we) will have to pay the AF in 2016 around the anniversary date in order to get the certificate earned this year, but I'll worry about that then. I am hopeful that Barclays will want to keep folks doing minimum $40K annually (for the EQMs) since once they lose us they can't get us back. Or that we'll figure out the timing on the companion certificate if we decide to cancel after. Etc.
