Early checkin for overnight flights JFK-LHR; and query re AA/BA through checkin

My apologies if my searching abilities are sufficiently poor not to have found the answer to this when it's here somewhere

1. We have just checked in for the AA flight from SFO to JFK which arrives at 1600 today. We are booked, on one booking, on BA178 to LHR tomorrow, leaving at 0805. AA absolutely refused to check the bags through citing their own 10 hour limit at JFK (formerly 12 hours). Now as this is a BA flight I wondered whether the AA rule applied. Has anyone any experience of this? I am afraid at 6am I was not awake enough to argue

2. Does anyone know whether it is possible to check in bags for the daytime flight to LHR (BA178) the day before? We will now be stuck with the wretched things at 1600 in JFK and I would like to avoid lugging them to a hotel...

Two points:

- In F, if it is relevant
- First world problems, I know....
