PH Chennai Short Report
Just flying home from a 10 day business stay at the Park Hyatt Chennai. Overall a lovely property and I'd definitely stay again if back in Chennai, the rate is a bargain at just over $100/nt.
Excellent service from the staff who repeatedly went above and beyond during my stay:
-Pooja G at the front desk was a great guide, acting as personal concierge - she gave me her card on day 1 and always had great recommendations, directions, advice and on my last night treated me to dinner at the Flying Elephant on property
-Providing me with a box of Indian sweets after I noted how much I liked the in room amenity.
-Arranged for a SIM card/had it waiting in almost no time with minimal charge directly to the room for the card. I emailed them a few days before my stay and they sent a list of the documents I'd need to provide when I checked in to arrange the hand off. 100% seamless when getting a SIM was looking like an arduous task
As a diamond, I was upgraded (guessing to a better view) to a room on the 4th floor (hotel has 8 or 9). Really enjoyed the shower and soaking tub. Every other night or so there was an evening amenity waiting on the desk, ranging from chocolate cake to sticky toffee pudding to burfi sweets (the best).
Breakfast in The Dining Room was very good, there is a hot (Asian/Indian) and cold (continental) buffet in addition to an a la carte menu where you can order breakfast entrees. I only ordered regional but everything I had was great. Favorites are the homemade fresh yogurt on the buffet with date preserves or sesame granola or the mango chutney which is out of this world. Fresh squeezed juices were refreshing and masala chai was perfect when I was feeling under the weather with a cold. Also the tomato chutney was the best I have ever had and the coconut chutney (both go with the dosa/vada etc) gives the one at the Taj Coromandel a run for it's money.
I did dine in a few nights as well and particularly enjoyed the fresh fried pappadum and the fish moilleen (light coconut curry) but I hear they are changing up the entire concept at the beginning of Sept to highlight 'lost' heritage recipes that sounds really interesting.
Location: away from the old part of the city, it suited me as I was working at the DLF park, 8km away. In the mornings it would take ~20 mins and travelling in the evening about 30 - 40. You can get anywhere in the city with a driver but depending on your primary base this location may not be for you. There is a great little grocery store across the street, Nilgiri's (a chain est ~1910) that is perfect for picking up some inexpensive snacks, spice mixes, local candies etc.
Note: Airport transfer is included with the room if you stay in a suite, otherwise it is a little steep.
